After years of being absent from the streaming music scene, De La Soul finally made their debut on Spotify, Apple Music, and other platforms last month. Unfortunately, this momentous occasion occurred shortly after the death of one of the group’s members, Trugoy The Dove. In honor of their streaming debut, surviving members Posdnuos and Maseo appeared on The Tonight Show on March 16 to discuss their journey in the music industry.
During the interview, host Jimmy Fallon discussed the impact of the trio’s debut album, 3 Feet High And Rising, which was released in 1989, and how it had influenced the lives of many music fans. Questlove, who was also present, shared his own experience with the album, saying that he had seen a representation of himself in the group for the first time. He explained how the group bonded over the practical jokes and the fun they had with each other, something that had not been seen in hip-hop before.
As the conversation progressed, Fallon acknowledged the recent death of Trugoy and how challenging it must be for the group to relaunch their career while mourning their loss. Posdnuos noted that it was a bittersweet experience, acknowledging the difficulties of moving forward without their friend.
Towards the end of the show, Posdnuos and Maseo teamed up with The Roots to perform “Stakes Is High.” The energy was electric as the two groups performed together, showcasing the talent and musicality that has made De La Soul a legendary group in hip-hop.
De La Soul’s streaming debut has been a long-awaited event for many music fans, and it was a momentous occasion for the group as well. Despite the loss of their friend and bandmate, the surviving members have pushed forward, bringing their music to new audiences and reminding the world of the lasting impact of their music.
