The year 2022 was marked by the continued dominance of hip-hop in the music industry. Rap and R&B have been leading the charts and streaming numbers since 2017, and this year saw the emergence of new stars as well as the consistency of established artists. Drake released two albums, Beyoncé made a comeback, and numerous female MCs gained widespread recognition.
The HOT 97 Digital Staff conducted a poll to determine the Top 22 Songs of 2022. The process involved asking the editorial staff to rank their top 30 songs of the year and assigning them point values based on their rankings. Songs that were released in 2022 were eligible to be included on the list. The winning song received 163 points out of a maximum 240 points.
The Top 22 Songs of 2022, as determined by the HOT 97 Digital Staff, are as follows: \”Munch\” by Ice Spice, \”Just Wanna Rock\” by Lil Uzi Vert, \”Wait For U\” by Future ft. Drake and Tems, \”Last Last\” by Burna Boy, \”Tomorrow 2\” by GloRilla and Cardi B, \”BREAK MY SOUL\” by Beyoncé, \”Sticky\” by Drake, \”CUFF IT\” by Beyoncé, \”Pushin\’ P\” by Gunna ft. Some notable trends from the list include the presence of Ice Spice\’s \”Munch\” as a breakout hit in New York City and the absence of 2021 newcomers like Baby Keem, Morray, and Mooski. The only artists to appear on both the 2021 and 2022 lists are Drake, Cardi B, Jack Harlow, 21 Savage, Quavo, and TakeOff. Kendrick Lamar, who released a highly acclaimed album in 2022, did not have any songs that stood out as top contenders for the year.
